Why it matters

Last year America's Fire and EMS personnel responded to 33,602,500 fire, medical and other types of hazards calls. Of these, 1,345,500 were fires resulting in 3,280 civilian deaths, 15,700 civilian injuries, and $14.3 billion in property damage. Additionally, more than 31 million Americans ended up in an Emergency Room as a result of unintentional injuries. These statistics, provided by The National Fire Protection Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overwhelmingly highlights we are in the throes of a public safety crisis that, year after year, dwarfs any other.
