Who We Are

The National Center for Fire and Life Safety (NCFLS) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization serving nationally and abroad. Our mission is to reduce injury and loss of life, property and resources by developing and deploying non-traditional, innovative fire and life safety prevention training and education. Our work is through a collaborative effort of highly regarded local, state, and national organizations, emergency services professionals, and researchers recognized as some of the world’s leading authorities in fire and life safety. Together we share a collective vision for ‘a safer world’.

Our campus, soon to be constructed, is located in Calera, Alabama just 30 minutes south of downtown Birmingham. The campus will house the national headquarters, an Education and Events Center, a Research and Development Center, a Tribute Hall and Meeting Center, and a state-of-the-art adventure-like public education center called the HEROES Activity Center. Additional land has been set aside for future needs.

Our journey began when retired Birmingham, Alabama Fire Captain, JD King, and his wife, Bobbie, approached Shelby County, Alabama leaders with the idea of using their vintage fire collection as the basis for a new museum. The idea was given a preliminary green light and the internationally recognized museum planning and design firm of Verner Johnson along with Leisure Business Advisors, LLC, a firm specializing in conducting cultural economic feasibility studies, were both commissioned to conduct and develop a comprehensive museum plan and feasibility study. For almost a year their team held one-on-one meetings and focus groups with local and nationally-renowned experts throughout the realm of emergency services, including conversations with corporate, foundation and museum leaders. The result: a model to develop a national organization with a life impacting Comprehensive Master Plan for a world-class fire prevention and life safety attraction unlike any other.
